    Quotes

Q01 - I invented every shot that has ever been played.

Q02 - I haven’t really had much to do with my life. All I’ve done is take part in it.

Q03 - The reason that I was so quick was because I was impatient. I couldn't wait to hit the next shot.

Q04 - I’m a one-off, a mystery man that would drive the world’s most eminent psychiatrist to his consulting couch.

Q05 - I want to be the Cassius Clay of snooker. Cassius is the greatest at boxing and that's what I mean to be at snooker.

Q06 - No Alex Higgins, no snooker.

    Subject Profile

Alexander Higgins was a professional snooker player from Belfast, Northern Ireland, who is remembered as one of the most iconic figures in the sport's history.

He is a two-time world champion, winning his first in 1972 aged 22, then the sport's youngest world champion with his second coming 10 years. He is one of only 11 players to have completed a career Triple Crown (i.e. win the sports three most prestigious tournaments).

Nicknamed “Hurricane Higgins” for his rapid play, and known as the “People's Champion” for his popularity and charisma, he is often credited as a key factor in snooker's success as a mainstream televised sport in the 1980s.

Remembered for his turbulent lifestyle, Higgins was a lifelong heavy smoker who struggled with drinking and gambling. He was often disciplined by the sport's governing body, most notably when he was fined £12,000 and banned for five tournaments in 1986 after head-butting an official.

Higgins retired from the professional tour in 1997. Diagnosed with throat cancer the following year, he died of multiple causes in 2010, aged 61.
